But it's only in recent years that I've become an enthusiastic Deanna Durbin fan, owing mainly to TCM. I like the line near the end of the interview, "when you’ve been smiled at by Deanna Durbin you stay smiled at". That's the way I feel after I've seen one of her movies. I wish she had carried on her career, but I'm glad she had a happy life away from the spotlight. I am in my mid fifties so ...I am feeling nostalgic. I am in my mid fifties so Deanna Durbin was not on my radar until a fateful turn of events. Myself, husband & children decided to move back to the city, Winnipeg, Canada after a 9 year hiatus. In short, a cute little house caught my eye driving by with a for sale sign in the front yard. We ended up signing the paper work to purchase. We met the woman who was selling & she asked us you know who’s house this is? I’m thinking ummm ours! This is the Deanna Durbin house. So she proceeded to fill us in. Little did I know what would transpire. I would be working in my front yard & people walk by to talk about the Deanna Durbin house! Cars driving by would stop to talk about who’s house this is! One day I was sitting on my sofa & heard my front door open & close. No one was there. I opened the door & saw an older man walking away, I abruptly ran after him & said excuse me can I help you. He was delivering the latest phone book & proceeded to tell me who’s house this is! He also suggested I should go to our local historical society & they will gladly tell me everything I need to know about Deanna Durbin. So I immediately went & to my shock there were walls/ displays of my house & info sheets on Deanna Durbin. Since we’ve hosted garden parties & social events in this house as fund raisers for the historical society all about this house. It was built in 1944. All the contractors donated their expertise & the only Eatons dept. store furnished for free. The idea was to sell raffle tickets with all proceeds going to an organization called milk for Britain. Remember this was during the war. Commemorated in Deanne’s name & she picked the winning ticket. Don’t think she set one foot in this house, but sold lots of tickets. The winner, a farmer from Saskatchewan, next province over, was not about to sell the farm & move sold equivalent value. Fast forward to 1999, we had a contractor come to update some of the wiring & much to our surprise he found some time capsules in between the floor joists. Magazines, dated 1944 & small booklets, gift cards & other items. Some were from the first family who lived here. We found out we were the 3rd owners. So this evening, finally the nostalgic part, my husband went out to see a short play. A one woman show, who was she portraying? You guessed it Deanna Durbin. That’s why we went! After the show we introduced ourselves & explained our house. She was ecstatic, so needless to say she will be coming by to look at the house! This is a younger woman who is over the moon about Deanna Durbin & what a set of lungs, her singing is amazing, just like Deanna Durbin! So as in life, so is in death. Deanna Durbins legacy continues on. No matter age or country one is from, Deanna Durbin has certainly made an impact back then & will continue with that talent & infectious smile. Sorry to be so long winded.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12270557817969163432noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22615056.post-49138089390487338702019-01-25T13:29:07.561-05:002019-01-25T13:29:07.561-05:00Have been a fan of Deanna Durbin's for forty-f...Have been a fan of Deanna Durbin's for forty-five years and still counting. A lady who knew that quality mattered and would not allow the Hollywood machine to compromise her art. A mother who knew raising her children, undisturbed, was the happiest part of living and being a parent. Love, the true purpose of life! Back in the mid 1990's I bought a movie called: "Four Jill's In A Jeep". The Actress Kay Francis mentioned Deanna. I remembered Deanna's name from that point forward. Then in 1997, at a place where I had been working I found a catalog from a company that offered all of the old films, on VHS. DVD's had just recently gotten started, but most folks were still purchasing cassettes. As I flipped through the catalog, I came across Deanna's Films. I knew instantly who she was, and I felt as if I had been watching her films for a long time. Of course I hadn't seen any. The movies from that particular company was expensive, but I suspect it was because no one else was offering such a large variety, except maybe Amazon. Of course, too, at that time there were plenty of places that sold films on VHS. The expense did not keep me from wanting Deanna's Films. However, it wasn't until about 2004 when I finally bought my first Deanna Durbin Collection, known as "The Sweetheart Pack". I haven't to this day bought another Deanna Durbin Movie, either because they weren't available or they were just to expensive. I will buy them now though, regardless of the price, within reason, of course. I think though that it is rather sad that Deanna would not allow another Generation Of People to have the privilege of enjoying her. Everyone who sees any of her work now with most likely be introduced to it by their family and friends. I've bought tons of movies and shows mostly based on having come across them somehow other than having seen them. But I do admire Deanna. she knew what she wanted. She didn't seem to be missing or longing for the limelight again. Maybe she felt that she had been there and done that and just couldn't bring herself to go through it again. She wanted what she wanted, but the studio wanted something else. So she kissed it all goodbye. She left Hollywood, packed her bags and moved to France, where she married her third and last husband. They had a child to get her and lived happily ever after. I think the mystery with her fans is how could she just leave like that and not show up again anywhere at all. Not at conventions or autograph shows or anywhere where her fans would gather. I can't help but to wonder might she have possibly been offered some rather juicy roles later, maybe in shows like: "Dynasty", "Dallas", or "Falcon Crest". Or maybe she could have done some lighter shows, like: "The Love Boat", "Fantasy Island", "Murder, She Wrote" or even a show further back, like "Perry Mason". Why not?! Actress Betty Davis did. And Deanna was luckier than a lot of actors and actresses. She didn't turn to drugs and alcohol. So many of them have succombed to such and many will continue to succomed to such, unfortunately. Though it has not been said what caused Deanna's death, she lived a long and as far as I know, a healthy life. May She Now Rest In Peace. I think too that Deanna probably didn't know how huge her fan base really is/was. That's a shame.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22615056.post-64663008574668138572014-09-20T20:32:53.887-04:002014-09-20T20:32:53.887-04:00I still love her videos.

As far as I know, he was the first one to make this interview available to the "internet public" at large, and I know from conversations I've had with him that it was not easy to locate a copy.

He generally goes by the screen name "Markus" and, for several years, has had his own Group devoted to Deanna Durbin on Yahoo! When I first became interested in checking out Deanna's legacy several years ago, I joined several Durbin forums, including Markus's, and it was, by far, the most informative and literate forum of any I'd seen.

For anyone who knows anything about Deanna's career, you know that information on her, while widespread, can be piecemeal and inaccurate. I'm sure I was a real pest with my many private e-mails to Markus with questions about Deanna's life and career, but he was always unfailingly patient and kind in responding to my questions, and referring me to sources I'd never have considered myself.

I think he'd kill me if he knew that I was telling you all this, but along with some other members of his Group, for a long time, I've been put out by the lack of recognition given to him for his many efforts on behalf of Durbin fans.

I know you like to give credit where credit is due, and I thought you'd appreciate having this information.

CCCCnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22615056.post-49579165845548335762013-05-01T18:03:12.144-04:002013-05-01T18:03:12.144-04:00DEANNA DURBIN R.I.P.
